Fall Activities for Kids

Happy fall! Though the leaves on our trees haven’t yet begun to change and the weather still is pretty warm, (we are actually expecting a heat wave this week), we have started some fall activities. I wanted to share two printables I recently made to help my kids decorate our home for fall. My kids really enjoy helping me to get our house ready for all the seasons. There is a Happy Fall coloring banner as well as a fall tree template that can be used in a variety of ways. We also created trees out of gingerbread dough, baked and frosted them, then added Fruity Pebbles cereal as leaves to welcome fall. Hope these printables and ideas can help to add some simple seasonal fun to your home as well!

This file is best printed out onto white cardstock. Two acorns print per page. Kids can be offered crayons, pens, or even paint. My kids always enjoy using their Faber-Castell watercolors. The acorns have really thick outlines making them easy for little hands to cut out. They just need to be hole punched on top at two sides, then strung up with ribbon, yarn, or twine as an easy and fun way to welcome fall.

I made this simple printable featuring a bare tree and added some text to capture this year’s fall. This template can be used in so many ways. Pictured above, my oldest daughter (9) used her fingers and dipped them in a variety of fall colors to make her leaves. This is a fun way to capture a little piece of them in time.

Kids can use dot markers to fill in their fall tree. This is my youngest daughter’s favorite method.

Another way to fill in the tree is to use tissue paper scraps and have kids crumple them up and glue on as leaves. This is a great way to use up wrinkled tissue paper leftover from presents. It is also a wonderful exercise for little hands to strengthen the fine motor control they will need to later write.

The possibilities are really endless! We also used this printable to brainstorm what we look forward to in fall as a family and sort of made a bucket list. We plan on hanging this up for display and having the kids continue to add to it.

Recently I had the opportunity to take a class at Glass Fusing with Friends with my mother-in-law and made this fall tree for her. I have a similar tree that I purchased last year from Terri during her art show. My mother-in-law saw it displayed in my home and really liked it, so when Terri asked what I would like to make in class, it was a no brainer. The class was so much fun. I found moving all the glass pieces around to be so calming and therapeutic. If you have the chance to take a class with Terri, I highly recommend the experience! The tree inspired me to make a smaller edible version for my kids below.

The gingerbread dough recipe is from Sally’s Baking Recipes. The kids helped me to roll the dough into three logs which we then twisted together to form trees. We squished the trunks and branches down a bit before baking to make the cookies thinner. We also used a butter knife to make a clean cut at the base of the tree trunk. You could skip this step and have roots. Lastly, we stamped the back of a wooden spoon to carve out a little hollow in some of our trees.

They only took ten minutes to bake in the oven then they were ready to frost. I used Two Sisters’ recipe for vanilla buttercream to make the frosting and added a bowl of Fruity Pebbles cereal for the kids to use as leaves.

My kids as well as my husband had so much fun making and eating them. The combination of gingerbread cookie, vanilla buttercream, and crunchy Fruity Pebbles is beyond delicious. It was a really enjoyable way to welcome fall into our home!
