Halloween
Happy Halloween! We love Halloween and always start decorating around Labor Day weekend. These are pictures from last year’s Halloween when we picked the Batman theme. As my son’s birthday is so close to Halloween, our theme usually extends from the one he picks for his birthday. I like to create silhouettes with characters of our theme in the windows of our home. They are simple to create (just black poster board, scotch tape, and white tissue paper), cost very little, and make a great impact. The kids always enjoy watching cars drive by our house, then back up to take another look.
This is a picture of our family dressed up to go trick-or-treating last year. My son is supposed to be Mr. Freeze but in all the excitement, misplaced the swim goggles that he had painted red. Little pumpkin was just born and was dressed up in little Batman sweats.
Although Halloween will be a bit different this year, I hope your family can still find a fun way to celebrate. I usually like to make the day special for the kids with fun foods, some special printables, and of course treats. We also put together treat bags for the kids in our community and will place on a table in front of our house for non contact trick-or-treating fun.
I made buttermilk pancakes from Mom on Timeout for breakfast, dropping the pancakes on the griddle to look like ghosts and inserting two chocolate chips for their eyes. I will make my homemade chicken noodle soup for lunch with pumpkin shaped carrots. Just cut two small triangles on top of each carrot slice to create a pumpkin stem between your cuts. You can use your knife to round out the pumpkin a bit more, but honestly my kids don’t care if their “pumpkins” look a bit pointy. They love food looking different and special and will often eat a lot of extra vegetables this way. For dinner we plan on making spooky pizza. Our favorite pizza dough recipe is from Sugar Spun Run. Last year, we made olives look like spiders on top. I am not sure yet what we will create this year but I am sure it will be fun.
I made a few printables which are all free to download below.
