Juneteenth Watercolor Resist
Today I wanted to share a simple craft I recently made with my kids to observe Juneteenth. All you need is a white crayon, some watercolors, and the template below that is free to download. I also made some simple coloring pages to help the kids commemorate and celebrate this important occasion. Hope they can be fun for your kids as well!
This file is best printed out onto white cardstock and given to kids to trace the burst, arc, and star with a white crayon. The star will also need to be colored in with a white crayon.
Next give kids blue watercolor to paint the space above the arc. This is when the magic happens and the wax from the white crayon won’t mix with the watercolor paint, revealing the traced image underneath.
Next finish off by painting under the arc with red watercolor paint to complete the Juneteenth flag.
This was a great activity to open the discussion of why Juneteenth is celebrated and what all the symbols mean in the flag (the star representing freedom for Black Americans and Texas where the last slaves were freed, the burst symbolizing a new beginning, and the arc a new horizon of opportunity).
I also made some coloring sheets that are free to download below. The first page is of the official Juneteenth flag (minus the date that slavery ended).
The second coloring page is of the Pan-African flag with the words Freedom Day written in the middle.
