Gingerbread Themed Printables for Kids
Need some easy and fun, low prep activities for the holidays? I’ve got you covered. I made these gingerbread themed printables a few years ago and my kids still enjoy coming back to these activities. They are all low prep, print and go activities. Hope they can help you to enjoy the little moments with your kids despite all the holiday bustle.
In addition to making gingerbread houses (or for us castles) around the holidays, we love making gingerbread pancakes and gingerbread cookies. The gorgeous plate in the above picture was handmade by Pacific Northwest local artist Terri Shinners, owner of Glass Fusing with Friends. She has incredible artistry, talent, and takes exceptional care in her work. Every year, I make sure to purchase some of her art as gifts for my northwest family and friends. Be sure to check out her site as she offers classes as well.
I created a gingerbread house paper craft for the kids along with a few other gingerbread themed printable activities. Maybe it is because my kids have so much energy and mischief, they find themselves easily relating to the gingerbread man. Everything is available to download for free below.
The gingerbread craft activity is best printed out onto cardstock. Your child can be encouraged to cut and paste the decorations onto their paper, creating their own unique houses.
We cut out the windows and glued our gingerbread men onto popsicle sticks to pop through the windows. To add more of a 3D look to the houses, we also glued them onto the sides of cracker boxes and created a little theater for the puppets. This activity was a hit and also provided a lot of extended play.
Here is a video I made to show how we put together this craft:
This same printable can have many other uses as well. We cut out the numbers and had my toddler count the gingerbread men and match them to the right house number. My kindergartener put two different boxes of gingerbread men in the windows then added them, putting the sum in the second story window of her house. I also slipped the printable gingerbread house into a laminated pouch and wrote different numbers and functions for my kids to solve.
My daughter loved her fish counting mat so much, I decided to make her a sheet of gingerbread men. This file is best printed out onto cardstock and laminated for more durability. The pieces can all be cut out then used with adhesive velcro. My daughter had an old Melissa and Dough cookie sheet that we used but any cookie sheet or plastic tray will do. This is a great activity to work on number recognition and counting plus it is always fun to “make cookies.” You can also print two copies to make this a matching activity. My daughter also enjoyed tracing the numbers as they looked like frosting. I added a frosting tip into a large Wilton piping bag and filled it with cotton balls so my daughters could pipe their numbers. This was a hit and they happily worked on their number formation.
The simple addition of some holiday kids’ bowls, cookie cutters, and a Christmas light necklace I found at the dollar store transformed their play kitchen for the holidays. I positioned the button for the lights in the middle so my kids could turn their Christmas lights on and off as they wished. I also added a felt wreath for little pumpkin (14 months old) to decorate with pom poms. The pom poms naturally stick to the wreath without any adhesive. Little pumpkin also enjoyed stuffing pom poms into clear plastic ornaments for our tree.
This is just simple lined paper that you can print out and encourage your kids to write or create a new version of the old gingerbread story… maybe he doesn’t get eaten by a wolf and is chased by someone new. Maybe he is actually a she. My daughter was quick to point out that gingerbread women also wear pants. She chose to write about making gingerbread women pancakes (just when I think they don’t take notice or cherish the small things) and my son wrote an adventure story asking me to print out more paper to finish (music to my ears!)
I also made these printable gift tags in case anyone still has some gifts to wrap or you can save the file for use for another year.
