Presidents’ Day
Today we honor 45 men (as Grover Cleveland was the 22nd and 24th president of the United States) who have served as the leaders of our great country. My husband loves presidential history and trivia so we like to take this opportunity to talk to our kids and teach them as much as we can about our current and past presidents. We also pull out all the books the kids have in their library about presidents to read and we make a sweet family treat called Cherry Delight in honor of George Washington. Even though the whole cherry tree chop down was a myth, we still appreciate the story about an honest young boy who later grew up to become not only our first, but one of our best and well-loved presidents.
My son, in second grade, has been working on math with money, and has been requesting some more activities with coins, so we decided to add a coin hunt to our celebration today. As my youngest is 15 months old and still likes to put everything in her mouth, I made a sheet of printable coins that are larger than life so that she could participate too. This is free to download below.
This file features my simple doodles of President George Washington, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln. I plan to pass them out to the kids to color, talk about which president is on each common coin, and then laminate and cut them. I kept these coins very simple, including only the presidents’ profile. I also made them in sizes that can be easily cut out with a 2 inch, 1.5 inch, and 1 inch circle punch so the only coins you may actually have to cut out is the 1.2 inch round pennies… or just give them to your kids for more scissor practice.
I plan on adding this coin collection to the kids’ play kitchen and have them add price tags to different produce and then use the coins to buy them, practicing addition and subtraction while playing.
These coins would also be great for a muffin tin sorting game. Print extra copies for younger kids to match the coins. Older kids could be challenged to come up with the coins necessary to make up the dollar and cent value placed in each tin.
