Summer Olympics

We are just a day away from the Summer Olympics! If you are hosting an Olympic watch party, planning an Olympic themed birthday, or would just like to be able to watch some of the games in peace with kids, you have come to the right place! Here are a few easy ways to decorate, keep kids busy, entertained, and excited to watch the games. Everything is free to download below. Hope it can be fun for your family as well!

As the summer Olympics will take place in Paris, France this year, I wanted to set the scene for my kids. I made this sign for our front door. It can also be cut around the black border to fit into an 8X10 frame and displayed on a table spread. My kids thought the chubby croissant was so hilarious.

In our dining room, I used blue, white, and red paper plates to create France’s Flag. This was a very quick and inexpensive way to decorate a large space and has created a fun place for my kids to not only learn about the Olympics, but about France as well.

More white paper plates were turned into a very simplified Eiffel Tower in our kitchen. Everything was hung up with painter’s tape. Finally, a little pennant flag featuring the Olympic rings was attached on top. The template to create these pennants is free to download below.

We made these easy and fun Olympic torches out of white plastic cups (purchased from the Dollar Tree) and paper towel tubes. I made some water bottle labels with the rings on the Olympic flag that my kids cut out and taped to the cups. They also used Sharpies to design their own torches. Lastly we cut a piece of red and yellow tissue paper in half and squished them into the cups to create the flame. My kids have really enjoyed running relays and parading with them.

We made these simple medals by covering wooden circles (purchased in packs of six from the Dollar Tree) with aluminum foil and cake board cover (for the gold). I cut a pipe cleaner into thirds and hot glued them to the back of the medals and we strung various ribbons we had through them. My kids also enjoyed using acrylic paint pens to further decorate their medals.

Here is my youngest proudly wearing the medal her big sister helped her to make.

This file is best printed out onto white cardstock, cut, and attached to straws, wooden dowels, or popsicle sticks to create fun pennants for kids to color and decorate. Three designs are included as shown with one blank template to encourage kids to create their own slogans and designs.

As usual, to spark my kids’ interest on a new topic, we visited our local library. We found a lot of great books to check out. Many were biographies of past and current Olympians. I made this simple trivia from our reading, leaving the last question a prediction for kids (or adults too) to make. I chose not to include an answer key as some of the answers to questions such as “Who has won the most medals?” could change.

I am always looking to find more ways to encourage my kids to write, especially in the summer. I made this simple printout for my kids to draw in their favorite Olympic sport and athlete and describe them in a few sentences. I find the best way to encourage kids to write more is to take advantage of what already interests them. Writing a little bit at home also helps me to identify areas where my kids need extra help with, whether it be spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc. This activity could also be saved and repeated for the Winter Olympics too!

I also made this simple printout for kids to draw in their predictions as they watched the games. They can sketch out which diver, gymnast, track star, etc. they predict would be standing on the podium. Hope it can be fun for your kids too!
