Party

Hello Kitty Halloween Birthday

My youngest recently turned five and requested a Hello Kitty Halloween Birthday. Here is how we pulled it off using simple supplies, little expense, and not much time (as we celebrated her big brother’s birthday just the night before). As usual, I made some themed party signs and craft templates that are free to download below. Hope these ideas and printables can be helpful and fun for your kids too!

Decorations:

I used white paper plates we already had and adhered them to the wall to quickly create Hello Kitty. I used poster board scraps in black and yellow to cut out her eyes and nose. I made a simple template that can be used above to recreate this if you need. Three paper plates in neon pink were attached to create her bow. This took only minutes to put up, costed us absolutely nothing, and really help to set the scene over our little kitchen table.

I made a large balloon garland using a mix of pink, white, and black balloons, added a few ghost paper plates from the Dollar Tree, and painted a large Hello Kitty on white poster board to decorate our living room. My kids added our bean bag chairs that house a lot of their stuffies and displayed a few of their Hello Kitty and Halloween stuffies.

In the dining room, my kids helped me to make another large balloon garland with black and white balloons, adding a few jack-o-lantern paper plates from the Dollar Tree, and our large wooden Hello Kitty dressed as a pumpkin.

I created some Hello Kitty Halloween themed party signs. They are available above for personal use. I printed them onto white cardstock and cut around the black border and used double sided tape to adhere them to our doors and wall. There are fifteen signs included. They are as pictured throughout this post with more details of each activity described below.

My kids helped me to paint a few large wooden cutouts. We have made numerous cutouts through the years. They are made out of 4X8 feet long panels of particle board. I projected images of Hello Kitty dressed as a pumpkin, witch, and mummy onto the boards and outlined them with a black Sharpie. My kids helped me to paint them. They make wonderful photo props that can be made ahead, ready to pull out and just prop up on party day to quickly set the scene.

Here is the birthday girl painting Hello Kitty dressed as a pumpkin and her sister starting to paint Hello Kitty in witch costume.

Here is big sister finishing the painting.

Here is our middle daughter posing in front, goofing around before the party started.

Party Activities:

I found free Hello coloring pages here and set up a little area inviting the kids to color.

I create more coloring pages here.

I used my projector to make a few large coloring pages for the kids.

Here, my oldest daughter (nine), helped me to create thicker outlines on the posters for kids to color. I purchased these white poster boards inexpensively from Walmart and used some Command poster strips to secure them to the wall. This allowed me to make use of the space in our hallway for another easy to set up activity for the kids.

My brother and his family made the long drive to come and help us celebrate. Here is my niece coloring one of the posters.

Here is the birthday girl coloring Hello Kitty dressed as a pumpkin. She wants to be a pumpkin herself this Halloween.

The kids did a really nice job with Hello Kitty witch.

Frankenkitty turned out a bit more scary.

I purchased these adorable Hello Kitty charms and set up a little invitation to make necklaces. I laid out a variety of alphabet beads, colorful pony beads, elastic string, and pipe cleaners for kids to create. My daughters and their friends really enjoyed this simple setup.

I made a bat and pumpkin template and cut them out onto scratch art paper. I purchased the scratch paper from Amazon. As the paper comes with only a few wooden stylus, I cut some bamboo skewers I had down to size to create more for kids to use. The kids had fun decorating their pumpkins and designing the wings on their bats.

I made a template similar to my popsicle stick snowflake template to evenly space out my popsicle sticks before hot gluing them together.

I laid them all out with a stash of yarn and spiders for kids to create their own webs. The birthday girl requested adhesive gems to be added to this activity.

I purchased air dry clay and these cookie cutters. The birthday girl helped me to cut and stamp out all these ornaments. We left them to dry and let the party guests decorate them with paint pens as another party activity.

My kids have added a lot of what they have created to our Halloween tree.

I made some simple witch hats for the kids to color and create. This file is best printed out onto white cardstock, colored, cut out and stapled together after measuring your child’s head. They are available here and can be personalized with kids’ names, ages, or event.

The kids also created Hello Kitty dressed in Halloween costume from saved toilet paper rolls. I cut out a little scoop on top to create kitty ears and my kids helped me to paint them white and pumpkin orange. I made a template above that kids could cut out and paste and included paint pens and Sharpies for kids to further decorate.

I filled a large black plastic planter with green balloons and hung a long green balloon garland extending from the planter to create an arch of bubbling ooze from a witch cauldron and turned my kids’ well loved play kitchen into a witch kitchen. I bent a black garland I had to create a large five and added eyeballs, bones, mini cauldrons, paper black cat plates, jack-o-lantern eggs, and pails to further complete the space. I also made several signs which are free to download above. Everything was five dollars as the birthday girl was turning five.

My kids helped me to bake pumpkin shaped sugar cookies. Decorating cookies is always a hit and setting up this activity was as easy as setting out vanilla buttercream frosting, these pumpkin cookies, along with some paper plates, plastic knives, and a few sprinkles, and letting the kids just go to town.

We found Hello Kitty Halloween tattoos at our local grocery story. I didn’t know we would be walking past them so I had already ordered some cute general Halloween themed ones on Amazon. I love including a little area for kids dedicated to temporary tattoos as it is a super inexpensive and low prep activity that is always so well loved.

We made a Hello Kitty pinata together from cardboard. This is an easy and wonderful way to make larger, more sturdy pinatas, that can fit into any party theme. You just need to cut out the shape of your piñata twice, add cardboard strips to the sides, and tape everything up with masking tape. We use masking tape as it can be painted or easily covered up with tissue paper and won’t show through.

We covered it up with white crepe paper streamers, gluing on some poster board and neon pink paper plates for detail. My kids always enjoy helping me to make and fill these pinatas. As the cost of making these are minimal, we get to splurge on filling them. We filled ours with the birthday girl’s favorite candy treats (Nerds) as well as a mix too for her family and friends.

As my daughter’s birthday is in the middle of fall, we like to include seasonal activities which she enjoys. This setup was as easy as placing a bunch of mini pumpkins on some tables outdoors, and including some paints, brushes, and aprons for the kids to create with. My daughter requested we include adhesive gems for this as well. This activity was also enjoyed by a wide age range making it a wonderful party activity for any fall birthday, no matter what the theme is.

We made this game using just a large piece of scrap wood. My daughter painted a giant cute pumpkin.

We then filled Solo plastic cups with small prizes (spider rings, Halloween themed erasers and squishies) we found at Target. Then we covered each cup with a square piece of orange tissue paper, securing it with a rubber band. Kids lined up again and again to punch for their surprise prize.

We made rings out of a pool noodles, added black duct tape for stripes, and found these plastic witch hat cones from the Dollar Tree. They are actually chip trays. I used a dry erase marker to quickly add some points to them for kids to play.

We purchased these jack-o-lantern plastic eggs from Target and filed them with a mix of candy, Halloween tattoos, erasers, more squishes, and spider rings. My husband read a story to all the guests while I hid them, then the kids were off to collect!

I created a bean bag toss from a spare sheet of scrap wood. I drew jack-o-lantern eyes and a large mouth and my dad cut them out with a jigsaw. We paired this with chocolate chip bean bags we had made previously for Derby Party and past Sesame Street Birthday.

As the birthday girl is a huge fan of kinetic sand and we already had a sand table filled with it from summer, this was a no brainer to include. I just removed her sea creatures and shells and added little halloween themed trinkets from the Dollar Tree. This is always a very inviting and calming activity for kids. My only advice is to set this far apart from the water table and also keep it covered when not in play if your neighborhood has any stray cats.

Of course we also had water play. The weather was gorgeous so this was really a welcomed activity that kids kept coming back to. I added a few drops of icing gel to make the water green, threw in some flowers from our yard, scoopers, ladles, and some Halloween trinkets from the Dollar Tree (eyeballs, bones, cauldrons, and spider rings).

Food:

We served a nacho bar. I threw some tomatoes, onions, lime juice, and cilantro in my food processor along with a jar of Pace mild salsa to make a semi-homemade salsa. I followed this recipe from The Cookie Rookie to make queso in my crockpot then transferred it to a warming tray. I fixed some taco meat and also kept it in the warmer. We also enjoyed some twice baked potatoes, traditional Vietnamese egg rolls, and shrimp chips that we make for most of our parties. The egg roll recipe handed down from my mom can be found here. The potatoes also tasted so good with taco meat and queso ladled on top.

We had a hot cocoa bar. This is something we always like to serve in any of our gatherings in fall and winter. I followed this recipe from Wishes and Dishes to make the crockpot hot chocolate and laid out some simple toppings (mini marshmallows, chocolate chips, candy corn, and cookie straws).

We scooped out lime sherbet and mixed it with a few bottles of ginger ale to make Witches Brew.

My oldest daughter helped me to turn string cheese to look like Hello Kitty dressed as a pumpkin. With her help, this took very little time to prepare. It is always nice to have some food that can be made ahead of time, ready to pull out on party day.

Here is my daughter and her very homemade birthday cake. I used this recipe from My Cake School to make the raspberry cake on the bottom and this recipe to make the vanilla cake on top. I frosted it with vanilla buttercream and added some simple details using candy corn, chocolate chips, and more frosting.

My daughter requested vanilla cupcakes. Everything was covered in this delicious vanilla buttercream frosting from Two Sisters Crafting. I made these simple cupcake toppers, cut them out, and taped them to toothpicks. They are available to download above for personal use.

Favors:

I purchased plain white bags from Amazon and made these simple bag labels. I make more personalized bag labels here. As this year, we had so many planned activities with plenty of crafts and treats, in lieu of favors, we opted to have guests just fill their bag with everything they made or acquired during the party to take home.

I also used the same design to make thank you cards which the birthday girl is still working on.

Here is the birthday girl posing with some of her presents. My greatest joy in creating these parties for my children is seeing all their excitement and happiness. I also really enjoy planning and creating with my kids.

I create more printable activities for kids here with the goal of helping to grow kids who love to learn.
