Memorial Day Crafts and Coloring for Kids

Happy Memorial Day! Hope everyone has been enjoying their long weekend thus far! The kids have been crafting and coloring, helping me to decorate. I wanted to share some of the projects we have been working on together. They are all very simple to create using the printables below, a few craft supplies, and some items from the pantry. Hope they can be fun for your kids as well!

I made some simple coloring pages that can be given to kids to color and hang to decorate. My kids really enjoy coloring and even hum when they color. They love displaying them for different holidays and occasions as well. The home of the brave coloring page can be downloaded here. I make more coloring pages here.

We also crafted some poppies out of white paper bowls.

This was made by cutting four triangles out of a white paper bowl to create the four petals of a poppy. The kids then painted the bowls red using acrylic paint. Alternatively you could just purchase red paper bowls especially if you want to have a lot to decorate with. My kids just enjoy painting though and we didn’t need many so we opted for the white bowls. We made the center of the poppies by creating pom poms out of black yarn. The kids just wrapped yarn around their hands and counted to 50 (for our fifty states), cut, tied, and trimmed. As my hands were larger, I only counted to thirty. This was another simple and inexpensive family craft that they all really enjoyed doing together.

I also made a coloring banner for the kids to help us decorate.

This file is best printed out onto white cardstock, given to kids to color with crayons or markers or even paint with watercolors. As my kids love to paint, we went with watercolors. I gave my kids red and blue with the intent of having the banner look patriotic but of course they also mixed everything together to create purple.

The lines surrounding each popsicle was intentionally made to be very thick making it very easy and forgiving for kids to cut out themselves. We hole punched and hung our popsicle banner up over our dining table to help set the scene for our family barbecue today.

I also dyed some uncooked ziti noodles with a few squirts of acrylic paint and hand sanitizer so the kids could make a few more patriotic crafts.

This file is best printed out onto white cardstock and given to your child to create a flag inspired patriotic heart. I dumped white glue onto a white paper plate and gave them to the kids along with some q tips. They also liked dipping the noodles directly into the glue then adhering it to their paper. They loved this so much they ended up making many more patriotic inspired art with their ziti noodles.

They made these patriotic fish using a printable from our summer playdough mats.

They also created patriotic butterflies using a printable from our spring playdough mats.

We also revisited some of the printables I made last year and made some patriotic necklaces. The cutouts for the necklaces are free to download here.

We also used our ziti noodles for some math play. I printed out our skip counting flag that is free to download here and hid some numbers with the noodles for the kids to guess, practicing skip counting and multiplication facts.
