Moon Festival Lanterns

Today I wanted to share some simple paper lanterns I recently made with my kids to help decorate for the Moon Festival (also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival or in Vietnamese, Tet Trung Thu) which begins today. The three lanterns feature a happy moon, moon cakes, as well as a silhouette of Vietnam. All you need is some white cardstock, the free printable templates below, scissors, and glue. Hope it can help to add a little fun to your family or classroom celebration as well!

This file is best printed out onto 110lb white cardstock. Your kids can color their lanterns using crayons, markers, or even paint them with watercolors. Stickers and adhesive gem as well as glitter and washi tape would also be fun additions to this craft.

After your kids finish coloring, fold the paper in half lengthwise, and cut along the dashed lines. This is a great activity for kids to work on scissor practice. My older kids still really enjoy this activity and look forward to making lanterns every year.

Open your fold, and tape or glue the two ends of your paper together to create the lantern body. Then either hole punch your lantern on top and add a pipe cleaner or simply staple or tape a paper strip on top so children can carry them. They can also be strung up with some clear fishing wire to decorate your home or event. If you used cardstock, the lanterns will be sturdy enough to stand on a table and a battery operated tea light can be placed inside.

My kids really enjoyed making their paper lanterns and were so proud to see them all displayed. They also loved parading around with them.
