Valentine’s Day

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Today is all about hearts and spreading love. I plan on making these pancakes for breakfast, dropping them onto the griddle with a spoon to make hearts. For lunch we usually enjoy this chicken noodle soup with heart shaped carrots or heart shaped sandwiches, and for dinner, we are going to order a heart shaped pizza.

I wanted my kids to understand that the hearts inside their bodies actually look a bit different from the heart shaped confections and treats we will be enjoying today so I made a coloring sheet out of my doodle of an anatomically correct heart and turned it into a cut and paste activity for them as well. It is free to download below.

You can simply hand it over to younger kids to color any way they like, just as they would color the regular heart shapes they are used to seeing, but begin to introduce the concept of what the hearts inside their bodies look like.

Preschoolers will enjoy the cut and paste aspect. Your child may need help reading the labels and putting them in the correct location. Older kids can be challenged to color the chambers of the hearts and vessels red or blue depending on whether there is oxygenated or deoxygenated blood. I included the correctly colored and labelled picture for a reference above.
